CPSI Overview

Christian Pilgrims Schools, International

Christian Pilgrims Schools, International (CPSI) is a private Christian school in Springville, California, offering a local Independent Study Program and an Extension Program for those not living in our area. Since the school’s founding in 1981 it has facilitated parents fulfilling their God-given responsibility to train godly sons and daughters in all areas of their lives, including academics.

We are grateful to see consistent academic excellence resulting from our pursuits. However, our priority is on training children to know and please the Lord. We are convinced that as we and our children "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness," as Jesus commanded (Matthew 6:33), all other needs in our lives, including intellectual development, acquisition of academic skills, and knowledge "will be added to" us for His glory.

Structure

CPSI students are taught directly by their parents under the general supervision of the school. In accordance with the implications of our Statement of Beliefs and Educational Philosophy, the school’s relationship is primarily with the parents, rather than with the students. Studies are only under the "general supervision" of the school, but under the immediate supervision of the parents.

CPSI families voluntarily make themselves accountable to the school and one another for fulfillment of the agreed-upon process and objectives of their educational plan. Progress is evaluated on the basis of written documentation and oral reporting by the parents. Parents agree to participate in monthly Accountability Meetings for encouragement, instruction, support, and open accountability among participants.

Leadership

CPSI is a subsidiary of Bold Christian Living, the ministry of Jonathan Lindvall and his family, in conjunction with various advisors and assistants. Jonathan has wide experience as a teacher and administrator in both public and private schools, pastoral ministry, writing, and speaking at conferences and seminars across the U.S. and internationally. He received his B.A. in Bible/Theology and Social Science at Bethany Bible College in Santa Cruz, California, and his M.A. in Educational Administration from California State University in Bakersfield, California.

Curriculum

Each CPSI family selects and acquires its own curriculum materials, as they see fit. CPSI provides curricular advice, but leaves the decisions to the parents. We do, though, require that any curriculum be applied using what we call "The PRIORITIES APPROACH." In this approach families prioritize their instructional schedule according to relative importance, scheduling higher priorities before lower priorities. Thus we endeavor to avoid being tyrannized by the seemingly urgent things while neglecting more important things.

We encourage families to move toward a discipleship methodology, focusing more on relationship than on curriculum materials, strategies, and structures. We encourage cultivating hearts as a priority over educating minds. We place a much higher emphasis on spiritual disciplines than on typical academic activities. Each family begins their school day with scripture memorization and rehearsal, devotional scripture reading together, and corporate prayer projects, before moving on to any more typical academic pursuits.

Expenses

Each family determines what it wants to spend on educational materials. CPSI does not charge any fees, but does ask each family to commit to contribute some amount to this ministry monthly. Enrollment documents and the Orientation presentation audio file are available for free download online at www.BoldChristianLiving.com.

    CHRISTIAN PILGRIMS SCHOOLS, INTERNATIONAL

    Extension Program

Christian Pilgrims Schools, International is a ministry of Bold Christian Living. Our local Independent Study Program (ISP) has historically only enrolled families willing and able to physically attend our meetings. Yet we have had frequent requests to enroll families at a geographic distance from us. The Christian Pilgrims Schools, International (CPSI) Extension Program (EP) is our attempt to serve families outside of our own area. (Please pardon the repeated use of these acronyms in what follows–it is much preferable to spelling out the words each time.) It may also serve as an occasional alternative means of accountability for our local ISP-enrolled families who cannot, for some reason, attend a particular accountability meeting. The following describes the Extension Program.

Each month (August through November and January through May) Christian Pilgrims Schools, International conducts an Accountability Meeting in Springville, California involving the locally enrolled families. The meetings typically consist of a presentation by Jonathan Lindvall, and then dividing into discussion groups for support and accountability. (Our understanding of "accountability" is essentially the same as the scriptural principle of "walking in the light," openly allowing others to see and hear what is happening in our lives.) These meetings are intended to be both instructional and relational.

The CPSI Extension Program is intended to replicate, as closely as possible, what the local ISP families present at our monthly Accountability Meetings experience. Each month Extension Program families will listen to a recording of the previous month’s Accountability Meeting presentation with at least one other family, and then openly share with that family about their actual experience over the previous month.

For many years the presentations at our Accountability Meetings have been recorded for release as audio tapes. The CPSI Extension Program now offers these messages on the www.BoldChristianLiving.com website without charge either for on-demand audio streaming or download as MP3 files saved for later use. Extension Program families will schedule a time each month to listen to the current presentation with at least one other family (possibly, but not necessarily, other CPSI-enrolled families). This will serve as their own informal Extension Program Accountability meeting.

(Jonathan Lindvall may occasionally be available in various places to present that month’s message live, rather than by the internet. If he is presenting a seminar or speaking at a convention, he may be available to extend his stay in that area to speak for an Extension Program Accountability Meeting. Or perhaps CPSI families will want to host his seminars in their area, with a view to also having an Accountability Meeting while he is there.)

The informal Extension Program Accountability Meetings should replicate, as much as possible, the CPSI Indepent Study Program Accountability Meetings in Springville. After listening to the recording of the presentation together, 1) the parents (and children, if the parents wish to include them) will informally discuss the presentation and 2) the enrolled family(ies) will share about the previous month’s discipleship planning between the father and mother & their students’ progress, displaying accountability documentation (work samples and either Daily Activity Logs or Fathers’ Plan Sheets) that will be sent to CPSI.

Each month, after the informal Extension Program Accountability meeting, each Extension Program family will send to CPSI, with their accountability documentation, a brief report of their informal visit/meeting. The report will include when and where the meeting took place, who was present, a response to that month’s presentation, and a brief account of how the meeting went. (A downloadable form is provided for this report.) The report and accountability documentation should be sent, accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope, so we can return these materials to you for your permanent home file, after we review & record them.

Some of the reporting may be conducted online. We plan to have a special new CPSI e-mail newsletter, including both the ISP and EP families. We may also have a private e-mail or online forum for CPSI families. If there is interest, we may allow some of the reporting to be submitted online.

One hope regarding the CPSI Extension Program’s informal Accountability Meetings is that families will cultivate a taste for open, intimate fellowship with others. Perhaps non-enrolled (even non-homeschooling) families will be invited to join these sessions, and be encouraged to follow the example of the families who share their lives openly. As families welcome challenging messages and then open their hearts to one another, we pray the Lord finds pleasure in the fellowship that arises through this process.
